Copy of Blog 214: The Job of Business

Updated: Dec 13, 2022

Do you have a job or a business? It is not just a trite question and the only answer is the honest answer. The difference in your answer can have a huge impact. The worst thing you can do is kid yourself. Remember that the beauty of having a business means you get to do what you want with it. If the answer is “Yes, my business is a job”, then consider the following:

  1. Make it the best job possible. The benefit to owning your own business (job) is that you can make it personally rewarding on your own terms without worrying about what your boss thinks.

  2. Generate a predictable wage (cash flow) by keeping your costs in check.

  3. Keep your clients/customers coming back by maximizing your ability to treat them as individuals.

  4. Only hire staff that will make your job easier to do.

  5. Don’t expect too much from your business. If you expect to the sale of your business (job) to make you rich you will be disappointed. Instead, make your business as attractive as possible for someone else who wants to buy a job. To do this you need to build client/customer goodwill and loyalty, have effective and efficient processes and great relationships with your suppliers.

Keep these guidelines in mind and you will have the best job going. Oh and remember, take enough time off to ensure that you are enjoying the benefits of your labour. After all, “All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy.”
